Israel is the light upon the nations, as is decreed in scripture. But how do we Jews understand this mission?
To understand this, one needs to understand what “light” is.
Light is, essentially an Egyptian core concept, that the Jewish faith community got from the time in Egypt. It is the main idea that drives the sun G-d Ra and the science that war conducted in what the Greek called “Heliopolis” a city dedicated to the sun G-d.
Light and the truth is the same. So light upon the nations means, speaking truth to the nations. Being a source of wisdom and guidance to the nations around the world. Being a UN in a sense. Trying to make peace where war is prevalent and help the nations, thrive and flourish.
There an added meaning to the concept of light, because as the sun is immensely strong in its light, the feminine lightsource is the moon.
The moon represents care, soft truth and virginity, purity. So the feminine version of “light upon the nations” is more benign.
Both perspectives, both the masculine and feminine are valid and usable for the mission. To make peace around the world, through wisdom, guidance and light.
The light is also the base of science. So a clear focus on science is important as well. One thing is the guiding light of religion. The other thing is the guiding light of science that can support and help as well.
Jews are good men, and rebels. The counter point to the rebelliousness is the help and sacrifice of Israel. In this way the ancient prophets set goals and ideals that are valid today, and will give Israel a good prospect of life.
